There are a number of films over time that are simply a must watch for movie fans. These leave a lasting impression on the viewer and can also be that motivator that may be needed. Here we cover five films you need to watch in your lifetime.

5) The Exorcist

This 1973 supernatural horror film is what really kicked off the genre and is simply a must watch. It is inspired by the 1949 book called Exorcism of Roland Doe, which follows the demonic possession of a 12 year old girl, with her mother attempting to win her back using priests help. At the time of making it had the shock factor and duly became one of the highest grossing films of all time.

4) Casino

This 1995 crime film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro was based on the book called Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas. The film covers the rise of Sam Rothstein as he travels to Las Vegas to run a casino. The movie is widely regarded as one of Robert De Niro’s greatest performances and is a must watch. It is another to be successful at the box office grossing $116.1 million. 3) Fight Club

This 1999 film based on the 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk has always been a film that has divided opinion. The film was not a massive hit at the box office but is widely regarded by many as one of the greatest ever made.

2) The Shawshank Redemption

This will be many peoples selection as number one and it without a doubt is one of the greatest movies ever made. This 1994 drama directed by Frank Darabont is based on the 1982 Stephen King novel called, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It covers bank worked Andy Dufresne being sentence to life in Shawshank despite his innocence. The film then covers his time inside, as he spends two decades money laundering for the prison warden before escaping. This is a true classic and feel good film of the ages.

1) The Godfather

Number one has to be the 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film covers the chronicles of a fictional New York crime family led by Brando and Al Pacino. This sees Pacino turn from the family outsider to ruthless mafia boss. It is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and is the most influential in the gangster drama. It was a huge hit at the box office becoming the highest grossing film of 1972. This is due to the fact it made around $250 million from just a $5 million budget. It is a must watch for film fans.
