One of the films that blew us away at Cannes this year was Lukas Dhont’s stunning Girl, the story of a transgender teen who dreams of being a ballerina. We have a new trailer for the film below.
Girl features a jaw-dropping performance by Victor Polster as Lara, a career-making role, and mesmerising direction from Dhont, who also wrote the script. We are hearing that the film is headed to Netflix in some territories, so it will definitely, deservedly reach an audience.
Determined 15-year-old Lara is committed to becoming a professional ballerina. With the support of her father, she throws herself into this quest for the absolute at a new school. Lara’s adolescent frustrations and impatience are heightened as she realizes her body does not bend so easily to the strict discipline because she was born a boy.
My review from Cannes read:
Polster’s performance is sincere, heartfelt, and so very naturally executed. He’s a triumph, a breakout role which will see him go far.
Girl is bound for international glory. It is an intimate, hard-hitting tale that will leave you gasping as the credits roll, but also leaving you full of hope and promise. World cinema at its absolute best.
Check out the new trailer below.
