Cannes Adds ‘Whitney’ Doc, New Lars Von Trier & Gilliam’s ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’

Following the initial announcement of the official selection last week, its seems that the organisers of he 2017 Cannes Film Festival have left the big surprises ’til last. The festival will screen the new Lars Von Trier film, welcoming him back after effectively banning him from the festival a few years ago. Von Trier will see his film The House That Jack Built screen out of competition.

They will also screen the Kevin Macdonald documentary about Whitney Houston, Whitney as part of their midnight screening schedule, along with the Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon-led redo of Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451.

The other big news is that Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote WILL pay at the festival. It will be the festival’s closing film and will screen on Saturday 19th February. It will then get a release in France on the same day.

Here are the new films added to the schedule in full.

Competition

UN COUTEAU DANS LE CŒUR (KNIFE + HEART)   by the French Yann Gonzalez starring Vanessa Paradis.

AYKA by the Russian Sergey Dvortsevoy, director of Tulpan, winner of the Prize Un Certain Regard in 2008.

These two films by Yann Gonzalez and Sergey Dvortsevoy are both directors’ second feature. It will be their first time in Competition.

AHLAT AGACI (THE WILD PEAR TREE)  by the Turkish Nuri Bilge Ceylan, winner of the Palme d’or 2014 for Winter Sleep.

The Competition 2018 will be composed of 21 films.

Out of Competition

Festival President Pierre Lescure and his board of directors will welcome back the Danish director Lars von Trier, winner of the 2000 Palme d’or, to the Official Selection. His new film will be screened Out of Competition.

Un Certain Regard

MUERE, MONSTRUO, MUERE (MEURS, MONSTRE, MEURS)   by the Argentinean Alejandro Fadel.

CHUVA E CANTORIA NA ALDEIA DOS MORTOS (THE DEAD AND THE OTHERS)  by the Portugese João Salaviza and the Brasilian Renée Nader Messora.

And :

DONBASS  by the Ukranian Sergey Loznitsa which will open Un Certain Regard 2018 on Wednesday May 9.

Special Screening

The animated film: ANOTHER DAY OF LIFE  by Damian Nenow and Raul De La Fuente.

Midnight Screenings

WHITNEY, a documentary by the Scottish filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, about the life of the singer Whitney Houston.

FAHRENHEIT 451  by the American Ramin Bahrani with Sofia Boutella, Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon. It’s the second adaptation of the novel by Ray Bradbury, after the one made by François Truffaut.

Closing film

In 2018, the Festival de Cannes renews with the Closing film tradition:

THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE  by the British Terry Gilliam, with Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce and Olga Kurylenko

The screening will take place on Saturday May 19 after the Closing ceremony and the film will be released in France on the same day.The Festival de Cannes would like to offer heartfelt thanks to all the artists, producers, distributors and sellers who suggested films. In total, 1,906 feature films were viewed by the various selection committees.
