Steven Spielberg To Enter The DC Universe With ‘Blackhawk’

Steven Spielberg looks set to join the DC universe with Blackhawk, which is now in development over at Warner Bros. Spielberg, who has just made Ready Player One for the studio, will produce the action-adventure, but may also possibly direct.

The announcement was made late yesterday by Toby Emmerich, Chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Emmerich stated, “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

Blackhawk, the character, is described as follows:

Blackhawk is an ace pilot, fighting for the Allies with his fabled Blackhawk Squadron. One of the Quality Comics heroes, Blackhawk has been around since the war, and had several reboots and retcons since then.

The original Golden Age hero was Blackhawk, an American fighting for Poland during the invasion. After his brother and sister (a doctor and nurse) were killed in a bombing by the German commander Von Tepp, Blackhawk gathered pilots from other occupied countries to form the Blackhawk Squadron. These adventures lasted until well after the war.

There’s no timescale on the project as yet, but Spielberg has already said that the fifth Indiana Jones adventure is his next film. That should kick off shooting in 2019 for a 2020 release. He’s also got a remake of West Side Story in development.

Spielberg added, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring ‘Ready Player One’ to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on ‘Blackhawk.’”
