80s Movies That Inspired Costumes You Still Wear Today

Kids don’t want to watch ’80s movies today. It’s a shame because some of them are classics. I bet they bring a smile to your face every time you think about them. In some ways, they’re actually going stronger than ever at the moment.

If you visit a costume party lots of people will be dressed like characters from ’80s movies. You’ll be able to pick them out in about 2 seconds flat. Can you guess which movies everyone seems to gravitate towards? Let’s take a quick look at them now.

1. Top Gun

One of the best 80s costumes can be seen in Top Gun. You can’t look at a pair of aviators without Maverick popping into your head. It’s the only film that’s popularized flight jackets too. If you want to get the look perfect you’ll also need a big cheesy smile.

2. First Blood

Rambo was meant to be a scared soldier searching for inner peace, but he quickly became the killing machine we all know today. Only animals are known to survive in tougher environments. Rambo has a distinct look that allows you to dress up like the former special forces soldier.

3. Ghostbusters

Back in the day, Echo-1 was more recognizable than the Batmobile. Ghostbusters was a lot more original than other movies at the time. Instead of shooting bad guys they captured ghosts. Not only do people wear the uniform, but they love carrying the weird weapons around.

4. The Terminator

This look was eventually popularized when Arnold Schwarzenegger asked a biker to take his clothes off in the sequel. Everyone who wants to wear a Terminator costume has to be comfortable squeezing into leather and wearing sunglasses indoors. Makeup + latex can be used to show your robotic side.

5. Scarface

There were lots of amazing gangster movies in the ’80s, but Scarface became the biggest cult classic. It’s probably because it focused on one specific person trying to achieve the American Dream. Tony Montana dresses in slick suits and likes machine guns.

6. Indiana Jones

The ’80s was the decade of Indiana Jones, a guy everyone wanted to be like. After watching the movies you felt like quitting your job to explore the world. To achieve the look you need to dress like an archaeologist, but don’t forget the hat and whip.

7. Die Hard

Bruce Willis is one of the action movie legends from the ’80s, and his costume in Die Hard couldn’t be any easier to recreate. The most important thing you need is a white vest. It needs to be very dirty and bloody. Combine it with a radio, gun, and a packet of fake cigarettes.

8. A Nightmare on Elm Street

Sometimes people like to dress up as bad guys too, because it’s a great way to scare people at parties. The scariest creep from the ’80s is Freddy Krueger. We all had nightmares about him for years. His black + red shirt and razor blade fingers are unforgettable.

9. Back to the Future

I bet you thought the hoverboard would be a real thing by now. Unfortunately, we’re a few decades behind schedule. Some people love to dress like Marty McFly, but you’ll stand out more dressing like  Doc. If you want to do it properly you’ll need a outrageous wig.

10. The Goonies

The Goonies is another film that made you want to travel the world, but this time it would be for hidden pirate treasure. Everyone grew to love Sloth, and they dress like him today. Do you remember when he swung onto the boat wearing suspenders over his Superman tee?

Try to count how many of these characters you see at your next costume party. If it’s a big one you’ll notice more than you think. You should try one out the next time you have to dress up.
