One of the most under-appreciated films of 2018 – in our minds anyway – is the Gerard Butler-led Den Of Thieves. We gave the film a very positive review when it was released over here in February, and were delighted when we learned that the $74 million or so was enough for STX to pus ha sequel into development. Well, the first film’s writer/ director Christian Gudegast, who will also handle the sequel, has been speaking to Screen Rant about the planned Den Of Thieves sequel.

Den Of Thieves sequel aiming for Europe
“Every studio wants a little mini-franchise if possible,” Gudegast said to the site. “Thankfully, thank god, we’re all very fortunate that it did very well and now we’re going to do a sequel which is great. But that initially the plan. That’s just something that sort of you know as we were making it and we were feeling that the twist was working, and it setting up well for a sequel – if it performed, that we would do one. And it performed so, the sequel will be something that I have researched for years and years.”

In the first film, Butler plays the lead role of [Big] Nick O’Brien, leader of The Regulators, a team of crack law enforcement troops working for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. We meet them as they hone in on newly released Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber) and his elite gang of bad-ass bank robbers who are plotting an almighty heist to set them on their way into retirement. However, as Nick and his colleagues soon find out, they may face more than they bargained for as the target of Merrimen and his crew is none other than the city’s Federal Reserve Bank, a seemingly impossible place to turn over.
50 Cent, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Evan Jones also starred in the original movie, and at least some of them (who survived the first film) are coming back for some more action. Gudegast elaborated on the story focus for the next film.
“I’m adapting a different story to make it a sequel about the Pink Panther mafia and the diamond thieves from Europe. It’s all going to be set in Europe. And it’s going be about Big Nick hunting Donnie, who’s involved in a diamond heist and he’s teamed up with the former Pink Panther mafia, and it’s about Nick hunting him along with… Nick is also going to be hunted by another group, I won’t reveal right now. It’s gonna, there’ll be a few different kinds of twist in this one. It’ll be hopefully very surprising.”
There’s no release date set for the project as yet, but considering how much we loved the first film, we’ll definitely be first in line for its follow up. More on the Den Of Thieves sequel as it comes our way. More at the end of the link above.
