Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and John Wick director David Leitch may sign up to helm Universal Pictures’ first spin-off to the Fast & Furious series. The Hollywood Reporter reports the news that Leitch is the front runner to direct the Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham-led movie, current set for a release in the summer of 2019.
The planned film, written by Chris Morgan, focuses on Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, the Diplomatic Security Service agent from the previous movies, and Deckard Shaw (Statham), an assassin who was one of the primary bad guys in the franchise before being redeemed and joining the motley crew of antiheroes that make up the roll call.
Leitch is in negotiations for the new movie, the latest in the massive $5 billion franchise for the studio. The film currently has a release date set for July 26th, 2019, so shooting will have to get underway shortly to meet that deadline. More at the end of the link above.
