While Justice League may have under-performed last year, Warner Bros and DC are still moving ahead with a number of DC projects following the recent shake-up of the DC film production team. Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 is already slated for a November 2, 2019 release date, while we’ll see James Wan’s Aquaman in December this year.
We can now add another film to the confirmed DC release slate, with Variety reporting that the adaptation of Shazam! will hit cinema screens on April 19th, 2019. The film is set to be directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation) and follow the adventures of young Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who has the power to turn into a muscle-bound superhero by the name of Captain Marvel (set to be played by Zachery Levi) when he cries out ‘Shazam!’
Shazam! should continue to enforce DC’s more optimistic approach to their films following the success of the wholesome, hopeful and earnest Wonder Woman earlier last year. It remains to be seen if Dwayne Johnson will make his big screen debut as antagonistic counterpart Black Adam in the film, but Mark Strong has been rumoured for a villain role and the cast already includes Grace Fulton (Annabelle Creation) and It‘s Jack Dylan Glazer, with production slated to begin early next month.
