The Shazam movie, which will be based on the famous DC Comics series, is currently in development over at Warner Brothers for a planned 2019 release with David F. Sandberg at the helm. The proposed movie, which revolves around a teenager (Asher Angel) who transforms into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi), is coming under fire from fans nearly two years before release though, with them seemingly already voicing concerns over which interpretation of the character we’ll see. There are supposedly issues with the fan base over speculation that the movie will revolve around the much maligned New 52 comics version where the lead character of Billy Batson was more Billy brash and cruel. Well, via the medium of Twitter, Sandberg has fired back at the apparent Shazam movie backlash.
Shazam movie backlash already? Really?
Here’s what he had to say:
“Not to stop you from having an opinion about something that doesn’t exist yet, it’s the internet after all, but as I designate a movie the obligatory Best/Worst Ever!! I find it helpful sometimes to have more info than a few character names. Sometimes I’ll even wait for a trailer of some sort if I really want to go crazy.
If it was up to me I’d share a ton of behind the scenes stuff as it’s happening since I’m all about that. Concept art, characters, sets, etc. I doubt it would stifle negative discussion though. More details only means more to argue about.”

We think that this is absolutely fair enough. No film should be judged until seen by an audience. Mark Strong is rumoured to appear in the Shazam movie as super-villain Doctor Thaddeus Bodog Sivana, though his casting is yet to be confirmed officially.
Shazam will apparently start shooting at some point next month for a release date set for April 2019. Sandberg will direct from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.
More on the film as it comes in.
