The ‘Ready Player One’ Book Is Getting A Sequel

One of the best literary reads, for me personally, was Ernest Cline’s throwback eighties sci-fi novel Ready Player One. I read the thing, pretty much on one sitting on a trip to Las Vegas earlier this year, and it has stayed with me ever since. Of course, I knew in the back of my mind that Steven Spielberg was directing the movie version, so that added extra weight, but the book is an absolute blast for us retro-freaks from start to finish, and still has an absorbing story on which everything can be bounced off. News today reaches us that a Ready Player One sequel novel is on the way, and no other than Steven Spielberg himself is reportedly working with Cline on it.

Spielberg isn’t directly involved with the writing, but Cline revealed on a Facebook live stream that he is available to bounce ideas off. He said:

“It’s true [I’m writing a sequel]. I can’t talk about it too much, but there’s no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they’ve already worked on when they’re watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life.”

The film version of the first book, which is published by Crown Publishers, is set to hit cinemas on March 30th, 2018 after nearly three years of production. Hell, Spielberg has even made another movie (The Post) in the middle of post-production, which obviously has needed quite a bit of CGI work.

If you’re unfamiliar with the story, here’s a little recap of the source material:

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. When Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

Appearing in the movie version is Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T. J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. Watch the latest trailer at the end of the link above.
