Phil Lord & Chris Miller Discuss Leaving ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Han Solo delay

Earlier this year, The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the Han Solo movie that has just wrapped up shooting with Ron Howard taking over the helming duties. Much has been discussed about their leaving the project, but we haven’t heard too much from the filmmakers themselves.

The duo were appearing at the Vulture Festival in L.A to talk about their MTV animated series Clone High. The outlet spoke about their experience of being fired from the Star Wars young Han Solo movie and getting replaced by Howard.

Here’s what they had to say.

“The experience of shooting the movie was wonderful,” Lord said. “We had the most incredible cast and crew and collaborators. I think in terms of us leaving the project, I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big.”

“Sometimes people break up,” Lord added. “It’s really sad, and it’s really disappointing, but it happens and we learned a lot from our collaborators and we’re better filmmakers for it. We’re really proud of the work we did on the movie and we wish everybody the best.”

Miller also discussed their time on the film. “We’re super well-adjusted, obviously we’re doing great. We’re super drunk right now,” he joked. “As Phil said, we had such a great relationship with cast and crew, we were really rooting for them. After we took a much-needed vacation, we got back into it and now we’re writing and producing a sequel to The Lego Movie and producing a Miles Morales animated Spider-Man.”

Sounds like they’re both in a great place as they are two excellent filmmakers, and while we’re sad that we won’t see their vision for the Han Solo movie, we can’t wait to see what Ron Howard does with the film.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out next May. More at the end of the link above.
