Disney and Lucasfilm must be pretty chuffed with Rian Johnson’s work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The studio has apparently given him the license, and probably untold budgets to go off and create an all-new trilogy of movies in the Star Wars universe! He is definitely going to direct the fist film in the new series, as well as write it, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman on-board to produce.
The news was announced prior to The Last Jedi’s release which is in just over a month’s time.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
The new trilogy will be set away from the Skywalker franchise that continues with ‘The Last Jedi’ and the planned Episode 9, which will be directed by J.J. Abrams.
No news on when the new movies will arrive, but we’re guessing post-Episode 9, which will roll out in 2019.
More as we get it.
