Frequent visitors to this site may have picked up on our coverage of new sci-fi disaster movie Geostorm towards the end of last week. You will have seen from our review that we rather liked it, even though we didn;t expect to. Well, the film hasn’t been doing too well at the box-office since it hit cinemas around the world on Friday, so much so that it may end up losing $100 million for the backers.
Geostorm opened to a dismal $13 million at the box-office Stateside at the weekend and so far has only managed to bring in $66 million around the world (at the time of writing). Given the movie’s $120 million budget, and with $15 million on top of that for reported reshoots, as well as all of the promotional costs, the film may end up costing Warner Brothers and its financial partners (Skydance and RatPac) somewhere in the region of $100 million between them when things are all said and done.
The Wrap reports the news.
Gerard Butler leads the cast of the adventure, which is directed by Dean Devlin.
After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong: the system built to protect Earth is attacking it, and it becomes a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything and everyone along with it.
We’re a little sad that the film hasn’t fared better, as, like we said, we really enjoyed it and championed its success somewhat.
