In quite remarkable and truly wonderful casting news, it appears that Cher has joined the cast of the Mamma Mia sequel. The film, titled Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, is currently in production for a release in 2018. The news was announced via Variety, though previously Cher tweeted the following image, alluding to her involvement.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again sees Meryl Streep return as Donna, Julie Walters as Rosie and Christine Baranski as Tanya. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper are also amongst the cast as Sophie and Sky, while Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Oscar winner Colin Firth all return to play Sophie’s three dads: Sam, Bill and Harry. It is not known presently as to who Cher will play in the production.
The original film grossed over $600 million around the world when it was released in 2008. It is based on the stage musical, which revolves around the music of Abba, and features the songs of the iconic group.
According to the trade, the sequel will go back and forth in time to show how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present. Lily James will play the role of Young Donna.
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again began shooting in September in the U.K. and Croatia, and will release in cinemas Stateside on July 20th, 2018.
