Entertainment Weekly have provided us with our very first look at Mr. Robot star Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in the in-production Queen musical Bohemian Rhapsody. The film is being directed by X-Men helmer Bryan Singer, and is now shooting for a release next year.
As you can see from the image, Malek is a ringer for the late Queen front man.
As well as the image, EW also spoke with filmmaker Bryan Singer on the story that will be told in the film.
“It won’t just be the dark Freddie story, but that being said, that also will be honored. It’s about collaboration. It’s a celebration,” Singer said.
Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) is writing the screenplay for the film, which will will tell the story of Mercury and the iconic Queen, who formed in London in the 1970s. The film will reportedly be set between 1970, through to their performance at Live Aid in 1985. Rounding out the cast as the other four band members are Joe Mazzello, Ben Hardy, and Gwilym Lee.
The film is slotted in for a U.S. release on Christmas Day, 2018.
More news as we get it.
