Will Ferrell is to lead the cast of an American remake of The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, the novel by Jonas Jonasson, which was turned into a 2013 Swedish movie of the same name. That film is currently the third-highest grossing Swedish movie of all time with $50 million in worldwide box office.

Ferrell is lined up to play the lead in the movie, which is being written by Narcos screenwriter Jason George, though no director is currently attached.

Here’s the official synopsis from the source material.

Sitting quietly in his room in an old people’s home, Allan Karlsson is waiting for a party he doesn’t want to begin. His one-hundredth birthday party to be precise. The Mayor will be there. The press will be there. But, as it turns out, Allan will not . . .

Escaping (in his slippers) through his bedroom window, into the flowerbed, Allan makes his getaway. And so begins his picaresque and unlikely journey involving criminals, several murders, a suitcase full of cash, and incompetent police. As his escapades unfold, Allan’s earlier life is revealed. A life in which – remarkably – he played a key role behind the scenes in some of the momentous events of the twentieth century.

“My character, Allan, knows the art of being funny just by being,” said author Jonasson to the trade. “That is something Will Ferrell masters to perfection. Great humor with small measurements. I am happy that Allan is now in his hands.”

There’s no timeline for this one, but we’re assuming its a little way off, but we’ll keep you up to date.
