‘Romper Stomper’ To Get A Six-Part TV Remake

Romper Stomper, the film that was the feature film debut of Russell Crowe back in 1992, is getting a TV remake courtesy of the Australian streaming service Stan. The original film’s director Geoffrey Wright, who went on to helm films like 2000’s Cherry Falls and the 2006 version of Macbeth, will co-direct the new series, along with Daina Reid and James Napier Robertson. Supporting cast members Jacqueline McKenzie and Dan Wyllie will reprise their roles from the 1992 original, but the new Romper Stomper TV series will not see a return for Russell Crowe.

David Wenham, Lachy Hulme, Sophie Lowe and Toby Wallace will join the cast though, with Wallace playing the character of Kane, a drifter who gets drawn into a hard-right Australian nationalist group.

Director Wright spoke with the Sydney Morning Herald about the new project.

“It’s contemporary, set in a post-Brexit, Trump world, where the right-wing politics of then have come into the centre in a much more menacing way,” he said.

“We’ve got an anti-fascist point of view and a secular Muslim point of view and the characters from back then – the ones who are still alive – are still with us and active in the world, and a new wave of nasties are afoot.”

“The right-wingers in our story aren’t the only violent people. We throw a light on a group on the other side of the fence that really hasn’t been exposed much before.”

The Romper Stomper TV series will begin production in Melbourne, Australia next week. There are no further details as to where it will roll out internationally, but we’ll bring you more as we get it.
