God’s Own Country trailer: One of the best films of the year so far

Picturehouse have debuted the first trailer for one of the best films of 2017, God’s Own Country. The British film, which arrives in UK cinemas from September, tells the story of young farmer Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor), who numbs his daily frustrations with binge drinking and casual sex, until the arrival of a Romanian migrant worker Georghe (Alex Secareanu) for lambing season ignites an intense relationship that sets Johnny on a altogether new path. God’s Own Country trailer: Watch the first promo for the superb Francis Lee directed film

We spoke about the film at great length earlier this month when we caught it at the Transilvania Film Festival over in Romania. It previously received a massively positive response at Sundance back in January, and then Berlin in February before moving onto Sydney, Australia this past week. Here’s what we had to say in our original review:

Undoubtedly this film’s biggest talking point is its director and writer. Francis Lee, formerly a film, television and theatre actor, has delivered a feature that is near flawless. It’s such a powerful, emotional, intimate, truly realistic and deep piece of work that deserves all the attention that it has been getting. Bold, engaging and an absolutely flooring in every way, God’s Own Country is truly one of the best British films of the year.

You can catch my full review at the end of the link above. There are very little spoilers in there, but do go in fresh if you prefer, as this film is absolutely one of the best we’ve seen in a long time, and perhaps served as cold as its rural spring setting.
