Brigsby Bear trailer: Dave McCary directs the unique comedy, set for release in the U.S. in July.

The film comes to the screen from Saturday Night Live writer Dave McCary and is produced by the Lonely Island trio along with Phil Lord & Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, upcoming Han Solo movie).

Brigsby Bear Adventures is a children’s TV show produced for an audience of one: James (Kyle Mooney). When the show abruptly ends, James’s life changes forever, he sets out to finish the story himself and must learn to cope with the realities of a new world that he knows nothing about.

The film also stars Greg Kinnear, Mark Hamill and Clare Danes and will be released Stateside on July 28th, 2017 by Sony Pictures Classics, but presently there is not a UK release in the diary. We do hope this gets one though as the film looks tons of fun.

Reviews have been mostly positive coming out of those festivals. Tim Grierson from Screen said in his Cannes review:

From Being There to Forrest Gump, cinema has produced plenty of comparable innocents, and Brigsby Bear sometimes labours to find fresh angles on a familiar construction. What helps is the specificity Mooney brings to the role. James is exceptionally sweet and open, but whenever he tries acclimating to the real world he retreats to ‘Brigsby Bear Adventures’, enjoying its comforting sameness. Gradually, the movie becomes a compassionate but constructive commentary on the danger of nostalgia — how it seduces us into sticking with worn-out pleasures at the expense of new experiences and challenges.

Variety‘s Geoff Berkshire said:

While Mooney has the most significantly fleshed out role, he and McCary have put together a terrific ensemble in which nearly every person gets a moment to shine. Standouts include Kinnear’s cop getting in touch with his inner actor, Lendeborg’s laidback buddy, Simpkins’ more weary sibling, and Kate Lyn Sheil’s diner waitress who played a key role in the “Brigsby” series.
