Universal Pictures has debuted the very first American Made trailer. The film is directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Supremancy, Edge Of Tomorrow) and stars Tom Cruise as Barry Seal, the real-life pilot hired by the C.I.A. to transport guns to Nicaragua in the 1980s.

American Made was previously known as ‘Mena’, and actually filmed in the summer of 2015 to be released this past Christmas, but the film was pushed to a late 2017 release back last August.

Cruise plays the role of Barry Seal, a TWA pilot, who is recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America and soon finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the United States. The operation spawns the birth of the Medellin cartel and almost brings down the Reagan White House.

We caught an earlier glimpse of the trailer for the fun-looking film at the end of last week, an event where Liman turned up to introduce it. The filmmaker, who is responsible for the likes of The Bourne Identity, Jumper and 90s favourite Swingers, spoke about why he got involved with the film.

“The really interesting thing for me about the film was that I was reading the script and by the time that I got three-quarters of the way through I was really in love with the story, and really in love with Barry Seal,” Liman told a room full of journalists.

“There are some stories that should be shown in history classes [which this isn’t]. I like anti-heroes and I love this character Barry Seal, who is basically playing the C.I.A. against Pablo Escobar against The White House against the Drug Enforcement Agency. He just had no filter at all, and really was drawn to the challenge of the excitement of it all.”

Liman re-teams with Cruise following their work on Edge Of Tomorrow, a film that will have a sequel titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat go into production in the near future. We’ve got a full version of the Q&A conducted with Liman coming up on the site a little later this afternoon, so look on out for it.

The American Made trailer can be seen in the player below. The film itself opens in UK cinemas on August 25th, prior to a release Stateside in September.
