Steve McQueen to direct authorised Tupac Shakur documentary

12 Years A Slave and Shame director Steve McQueen will direct a feature documentary on rapper Tupac Shakur. A Deal has been made with Shakur estate trustee Tom Whalley and Amaru Entertainment to bring a new documentary to the screen which will be a fully authorised documentary on the life of late hip-hop artist, writer and poet.

Nigel Sinclair’s White Horse Pictures and Jayson Jackson will produce the film with McQueen helming. Sinclair is responsible for the recent Ron Howard directed Beatles documentary The Beatles: Eight Days A Week–The Touring Years so the picture is in great hands.

McQueen was quoted on Deadline in saying: “I am extremely moved and excited to be exploring the life and times of this legendary artist. I attended NYU film school in 1993 and can remember the unfolding hip-hop world and mine overlapping with Tupac’s through a mutual friend in a small way. Few, if any shined brighter than Tupac Shakur. I look forward to working closely with his family to tell the unvarnished story of this talented man.”

A dramatised account of Tupac’s life will be released later in 2017; Benny Boom’s All Eyez On Me.

No news on timelines for the documentary, but we’ll keep you posted.
