A ‘Hellboy’ remake is on the way from Neil Marshall

A Hellboy remake is in active development according to the original creator Mike Mignola. Mignola took to Facebook to confirm earlier rumours that a new film would be on the way but this time original director Guillermo del Toro will not be directing – that duty will go to none other than The Decent and regular Game Of Thrones director Neil Marshall who will bring a rebooted version which will be R-rated.

Hellboy remake will be R-rated, says series creator Mike Mignola

Hellboy first debuted in literary form in San Diego Comic Con Comics #2, which was published in August 1993. The character is part of the B.P.R.D. – The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense – and has so far featured in two movies; Hellboy in 2004 and its sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army four years later in 2008, both of which saw Ron Perlman (Sons Of Anarchy, Hand To God) in the lead role. Perlman will not appear in the Hellboy remake currently in development though.

The Hellboy remake will have a new actor filling the boots of the title character. This time Stranger Things actor David Harbour will play the red-tinted, cigar-smoking hero. The actor was also seen recently in the Jamie Foxx-led action thriller Sleepless, which was released in the Uk this past weekend. Here’s the update from Mignola from early this morning.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that Millennium is in negotiations with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin for the new instalment which Mike Richardson from Dark Horse Entertainment will also produce.

The planned film also has a working title; Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and already has a script written by Andrew Cosby (Eureka), Christopher Golden and Mignola.

In terms of timeline we have no idea when the Hellboy remake will arrive, or even start shooting, but we’ll keep you posted.
