Hardly any CGI was used to de-age Kurt Russell in ‘Guardians 2’

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in UK cinemas this weekend, and it is getting some pretty decent reviews from critics (including us). Well, in the opening scenes of the film, we get to see a very young Kurt Russell – and that’s not a spoiler as it is literally the first scene. So, in an interview quoted by MovieWeb, Russell revealed that hardly any CGI was needed to take him back to the era of Big Trouble In Little China, Escape From New York and, erm Overboard.

So, how did the folks at Marvel Studios manage to transform Kurt Russell using largely practical effects. The man himself has the info.

“Before we went in there we assumed that it was gonna be all CGI. And [makeup artist Dennis Liddiard] said to James [Gunn] and the cinematographer [Henry Braham], ‘Hey, I can young this guy down. I got some tricks in my bag. Would that be helpful?’ And they said, ‘Yeah, as much as you can. That would be great.’ I was speaking to the gal last night who does the CGI. She said, ‘What did you think of what we did?’ And I said, ‘I thought it was great. But I understand you didn’t do a whole lot?’ She said, ‘No we didn’t. We touched it up here and there.’ He did a fantastic job. He does have a lot of tricks, not just makeup. Cosmetics I should say.”

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in U.S. cinemas at the end of next week, and is now playing in cinemas across the UK. Go see it as soon as you can – it’s really rather awesome.
