Following his huge success with the Oscar-nominated Elle, which was released earlier this year after debuting at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Paul Verhoeven has lined up his next film. The legendary Dutch filmmaker will remain in the French language for Blessed Virgin, so reports Deadline.
The trade blog reports that the film will star Virginie Efira (who appeared in Elle) as Sister Benedetta Carlini, a 17th century nun who was hailed as a visionary but later accused of fabricated miracles, homosexuality and other charges, and imprisoned for 35 years. The work will be based on the book Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy which was first published in 1986 and written by historian Judith C Brown.
Verhoeven will team with producer Saïd Ben Saïd for the film, who confirmed the announcement on Twitter. The film will shoot under the name ‘Sainte Vierge’, beginning production very soon. More as we get it.
