Fast and Furious 8 looking at $380 million global opening

Today, the eight film in the Fast and Furious series hits UK cinemas. Fast and Furious 8 seems to have so far split critics with some going all out with positive reviews and others at the other end of the spectrum. We were in the former camp – we loved it – and you can read our full review on the site over here, but those slightly more negative reviews are doing the movie’s box-office any damage with early predictions coming in for its potential opening weekend.

The film cost a reported $250 million, which is huge, but let’s not forget that the last film in the series, released in 2015, brought in $1.5 billion for the studio. Furious 7 managed to haul in $397.7 million worldwide in its opening few days, which includes $147.2 million domestically. Currently, Fast and Furious 8, or indeed The Fate of the Furious as it is referred to Stateside, is tracking to top $380 million and could even accelerate past the $400 million mark… which is great news for the studio and everyone involved with the high-octane adventure. Domestically it is tracking at a little less than Furious 7 at around $100 million, but there’s still a couple of days before its big Stateside opening.

We’ll be updating the site into the weekend with the numbers, so do check back on Sunday for a more detailed measure.
