I have a soft spot for the Jack Reacher movies, and even the Lee Child novels, but I guess even I imagined that Reacher would be… bigger in the movies.Tom Cruise, who bagged the part, reportedly only stands at 5ft 7in – and the character is written as being 6ft 5in.
Well, Cruise is pretty decent as Reacher, but another Hollywood heavyweight has revealed that he once went for the coveted role, only to lose out. That man was Dwayne Johnson who was told by a fan that he would be perfect for the role… His reply on Twitter:
“Yup, luv the character. Bout 10yrs ago I went after the role, but Cruise got it. Was great motivation for me to always stay hungry.”
We’d have to agree with that fan, but the Reacher films have been a success – and we’re guessing Johnson isn’t complaining judging by his career subsequently. Jack Reacher, released back in 2012, scored around $211 million in box office receipts, while last year’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back took in slightly less with $162 million piled up in the bank. The film had moderate budgets – around the $60 million mark – so were quite respectable successes for Paramount Pictures who distributed.

There are tons of books on shelves for future projects, so bank on seeing more of Cruise as the character in the future. We would have loved to see Johnson in the role, but they would have been very different films – for better or worse, depending on your stand-point. We’re in the former camp.
