She’s already starred, albeit briefly, in The Hunger Games franchise, but clearly one YA (that’s Young Adult for those not in the know) adaptation isn’t enough for Gwendoline Christie. The Game of Thrones and Star Wars star has just been linked to The Darkest Minds.
The film is based on a trilogy of books, YA series nearly always come in threes it seems, and will be directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. Nelson is best known for her work on Kung-Fu Panda 2 & 3, with The Darkest Minds being her first live-action feature.
The setting is of course post-apocalyptic America (aren’t they always?) with almost all children wiped out. Basically a disease has torn through the globe, killing around 98% of the young population, the surviving 2% gaining superhuman like powers. These remaining children are existing within internment camps for their own ‘safety’. Christie will play a bounty-hunter enlisted to track down young, supercharged Ruby after she escapes. We’re sure they’ll be the usual YA twists and turns along the way.
The rest of the cast is still being drafted however, the part of Ruby will be played by Amandla Stenberg, better known as Rue from The Hunger Games. Also aboard is Mandy Moore (This is Us) and Partrick Gibson (The OA).
The Darkest Minds will arrive in cinemas sometime in late 2018.
