Can Emma Stone do the double? Billie Jean King Biopic Gets Awards-Season Release Date

Emma Stone won this year’s Best Actress Oscar for her performance in La La Land. Fox Searchlight, who will release her new movie Battle of the Sexes, seem hopeful that lightening will strike twice.

Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie FarisBattle of the Sexes tells the true story of the 1973 tennis match between World number one, Billie King (Stone), and ex-champ and serial hustler, Bobby Riggs. In hope of capturing some gold it will release on 22nd September, putting it right in the awards season window.  Starring alongside Stone, and also likely to be in line for awards, is Steve Carell. Carell will play King’s rival Riggs.

This will be Stone’s first role post win and it looks like she’ll manage to avoid the Best Actress curse. The likes of Charlize Theron and Halle Berry all fell foul of it, following their win with an ill-advised action flick.

Battle of the Sexes will arrive in cinemas from 22nd September 2017.
