Joe Carnahan on R-rated Uncharted script, The Raid remake

Uncharted movie remake

Uncharted movie remake was written with an R-rating in mind.

NARC and The A-Team filmmaker Joe Carnahan has got a ton of projects on the go at the moment. His next directorial effort will be Bad Boys For Life, the third film in the Bad Boys series, which is set to go into production this year. Apart from that, Carnahan has written the screenplay for the  Uncharted movie remake which he gave a brief update on to Coming Soon.

“When I wrote ‘Uncharted,’ I didn’t spare the rod,” Carnahan said.  “I wrote it the way the video game is. They swear in the game, they’re kinda foul-mouthed and I kept all that stuff intact and I definitely didn’t write it as a PG-13 movie, I wrote it the way that movie should be written.”

“R-rated movies were the movies we were into – “Predator”, those were all R-rated films. “The Matrix” movies were all R-rated. I never understood the metric for, ‘This will make X-amount more if it were PG-13.’ PG-13 in a lot of ways is a cop out, and I think its been exposed as such.”

Carnahan also has a remake of Gareth Evans’ The Raid in the works too, surely another film that has to go down the route of the harder rating. He provided an update to that too to the website Collider Stateside, who said that he committed to making the film as “most people beyond cinephiles have not seen the original movie”.

The plan is for the remake to be made for under $20 million, and according to reports, he is writing the screenplay on-spec, meaning that there is no money involved as yet – the film will have to turn a profit for anyone to get paid. The report adds that Carnahan will not employ highly-stylised action sequences a la the original, but go down the route of hardcore violence, cites the “knife fight between Adam Goldberg and the German in Saving Private Ryan” for the tone of the film. R-rating guaranteed then. Iko Uwais, who appeared in the first two movies from Gareth Evans could also appear in the new film, as it was revealed that he had already reached out to be involved in the project.
