Director Rian Johnson on ‘Star Wars Episode VIII’

Filmmaker Rian Johnson has finally spoken about some key plot points for the upcoming Star Wars Episode VIII, which is due in cinemas this coming December. We don’t have an official title for the film as yet, and are yet to see a trailer, but Johnson has spilled the beans on some aspects of the story, and how the film follows Star Wars: The Force Awakens and that meeting between Rey and Luke Skywalker at the end of the movie.

“I don’t want to skip ahead two years, I want to see the very next moment of what happens,” said Johnson. The talented director of Looper and Brick added that Luke and Rey’s relationship is “a large part of the movie” and will be addressing why Luke’s on Ahc-To Island, as well as his purpose moving forward. “Part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson added. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”

Johnson’s comments were made to USA Today.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis return for the new episode, along with franchise newcomers Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

The film will be released everywhere on December 15th 2017.
