J.J. Abrams was present at the Golden Globe awards on Sunday night in Beverly Hills, and the talented filmmaker and producer was talking up Westworld, which was nominated in multiple categories. When speaking to People, Abrams touched on what he would be concentrating on in the future, and it seems like he is done with the sequel and reboot business.
“You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid,” Abrams said. “In fact, even Westworld, which we’re here for tonight, is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again. I feel like I’ve done enough of that that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot.”
Of course, Abrams helmed the third film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, rebooted Star Trek for Paramount, and directed the very first film in the new Star Wars series in The Force Awakens.
“I do think that if you’re telling a story that is not moving anything forward, not introducing anything that’s relevant, that’s not creating a new mythology or an extension of it, then a complete remake of something feels like a mistake.”
Abrams has yet to decide on his next directorial project, but will return to the Mission: Impossible series for another movie (the sixth) as executive producer.
