‘Moonlight’ tops L.A. Film Critics Association awards

The L.A. Film Critics Circle Association were the other big awards to be dished out this past weekend, and Moonlight was the big winner of the night taking Best Picture, Best Director for Barry Jenkins, Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, and Best Cinematography for James Laxton.

Surprisingly Adam Driver pipped Casey Affleck to the post to take Best Actor for Paterson, while Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress for her roles in Elle and Things To Come, two huge festival favourites. In the female supporting category, Lily Gladstone picked up an award for her work on Certain Women.

The awesome Your Name grabbed Best Animated Film, while Korean horror The Handmaiden took Best Foreign Lanuguage Film.

Efthymis Filippou and Yorgos Lanthimos bagged Best Screenplay for The Lobster.

Best Animated Film:
“Your Name”. Runner-up: “The Red Turtle”

Best Foreign Language Film:
“The Handmaiden”. Runner-up: “Toni Erdmann”

Best Documentary/Non-Fiction:
“I Am Not Your Negro”. Runner-up: “O.J.: Made in America”

Best Screenplay: Efthymis Filippou and Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Lobster”). Runner-up: Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”)

Best Supporting Actor:
Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”). Runner-up: Issey Ogata (“Silence”)

Best Supporting Actress:
Lily Gladstone (“Certain Women”). Runner-up: Michelle Williams (“Manchester by the Sea”)

Best Editing:
Bret Granato, Maya Mumma, Ben Sozanski (“O.J.: Made in America”). Runner-up: Tom Cross (“La La Land”)

Best Production Design:
Ryu Seong-hee (“The Handmaiden”). Runner-up: David Wasco (“La La Land”)

Best Music Score:
Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul (“La La Land”). Runner-up: Micah Levi (“Jackie”)

Best Cinematography:
James Laxton (“Moonlight”). Runner-up: Linus Sandgren (“La La Land”)

Lifetime Achievement:
Shirley MacLaine

New Generation Prize
“Krisha” from Edward Shults and Krisha Fairchild.

Douglas Edwards Independent/Experimental Film/Video Prize
“The Illinois Parables” from writer-director Deborah Stratman
