Escape From New York remake: It has been revealed that the planned redo is actually a prequel.
More Escape From New York remake news below.
Is nothing sacred! We hear you, don’t worry, but stay with us. Yes, we knew that a potential remake of John Carpenter‘s Escape From New York was in the planning stages for quite some time, but new information has surfaced to reveal that the film won’t actually be a reboot at all, but a prequel.
TheWrap reports:
In the new “Escape From New York,” New York City won’t be a maximum security prison, we’ll find out “Snake” Plissken’s real name, and the bad guy will be totally different than the original. Also? It won’t start in New York.
The new film’s aim is to compliment Carpenter’s 1980s classic which starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, the hero protagonist who also surfaces in a less memorable sequel, Escape From L.A. some years later.
Neal Cross, the man responsible for the really rather good BBC TV series Luther is developing the planned prequel. Cross is writing the screenplay and Carpenter is executive producing, so this actually bodes rather well.
We’ve not got too much more on the subject as yet, though the awesome Bloody Disgusting are reporting that the prequel is to reboot the franchise much like Fox did with Planet of the Apes, setting up a trilogy that leads into the classic film, but is also in canon.
BD also have some more exciting news on the project at the end of the link above, including the revelation of Plisken’s real name, and various other key plot points. However, don’t click if you’re still trying to avoid spoilers for the original story contained within Escape from New York.
The site also revealed that Cross delivered a draft of the screenplay back in October.
We’ll keep you updated on the Escape From New York remake / prequel as it comes in.
