The superb Moonlight has kicked off its [sure-to-be] gold rush by taking one of the first big awards of the season at the Gotham Awards. The Barry Jenkins-directed film, which we saw back at the London Film Festival in October, took Best Feature, beating the likes of Paterson, Certain Women, Everybody Wants Some!!, and Manchester By The Sea.

The film also took the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award as well as Best Screenplay for Jenkins and the Special Jury Award For Ensemble Performance.

The film is a poetic coming-of-age tale told across three chapters about a young gay black kid growing up in a poor, drug-ridden neighbourhood of Miami.

Elsewhere, Casey Affleck deservedly took home the Best Actor gong for Manchester By The Sea, while Isabelle Huppert was awards the Best Actress award for her word in Paul Verhoeven’s Elle. That film has also been doing exceptionally well on the awards circuit since its debut in Cannes back in May. Anya Taylor-Joy took the Breakthrough Actor award for Robert Eggers’ The Witch, another film that has potential legs for awards season.
