I sometimes wish I could jump back to the 1990s. Not only for the decent music (Blur, Oasis, Take That, Kriss Kross), but for the massive LP-size Laserdiscs that were on sale in your local HMV for anything between £25 and £50+ each.
Well, now it looks like as well as vinyl, they may be making a [kind-of] huge comeback as Disney have unveiled some of their latest films re-issued in the DVD and Blu-ray format is massive Laserdisc/ LP-sized packaging.
Films available are: Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars the Force Awakens, Finding Dory, Aladdin, Beauty & The Beast and Cinderella (Live action). What an absolute genius move.
The bad news is that out of the six that we’ve featured above, only one (Finding Dory) seems to be in stock at Amazon. So, although they are retailing at a little more than the conventional release (around £19.99), they are being snapped up quite quickly in time for the festive rush.
These are superb gifts and collectable items and we sure hope that some of the other studios and distributors follow suit as we’re sure that movie collectors would love to get their hands on this kind of thing. Even though they’re bigger, they’re more attractive to the eye and actually take up less space, so it’s a no brainer.
For the ultimate collectors, Laserdiscs are still being offered for sale on eBay, some with a massively inflated price. For example, the Wham! 80s Music Videos release will still set you back at least $35, though in my eyes it’s well worth it.
