Justin Lin, the filmmaker who directed the likes of The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift and the three sequels that followed, as well as this summer’s Star Trek Beyond, will head to the small screen to develop a new Knight Rider TV series with Machinima.

The announcement was made today by Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein.

“Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact,” said Gutstein. “Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”

Lin will produce the new show, which could hit screens as early as 2017.

The original 1980s show was a launch pad for David Hasselhoff and revolved around his character of Michael Knight, a police detective with a talking and highly weaponised car named KITT.

It was… awesome.

More news on this exciting new series as we get it.
