Captain Marvel to be an origin story after all

captain-marvel

A little while back it was being reported that the forthcoming Captain Marvel film, which is being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the GalaxyChallenger), was not going to be an original story. Well, now it looks like Marvel may have back-tracked on that idea and it will indeed tell the origins of Carol Danvers/ Captain Marvel after all.

Marvel Studios’ head honcho Kevin Feige has been quoted as saying that “Captain Marvel is certainly an origin [story],” adding that “it’s an origin story from the start.” Well, it doesn’t get any clearer from that, does it? Marvel are riding a tide of success at the moment with many films in production, including the likes of Thor: RagnarokSpider-Man: HomecomingGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and two more Avengers movies. As well as all of that, there is the merchandise and the spin-offs, and also Marvel video games, including the recently hatched Lego Marvel’s Avengers. But there is more to it because there are even online casino games out there branded with the Marvel name, such as the online Marvel Roulette, a perfect mix of geekery and gambling. So the Disney-owned studio is doing exceptionally well.

Captain Marvel won’t land until 2019, but it already has the talented Brie Larson (Room) on board as the title character. The film will tell the story of Carol Danvers, a former Air Force student who quickly rose to the rank of Major. From there she went to work in the C.I.A. with Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson in the Avengers movies) and then onto N.A.S.A. as the security director for Cape Canaveral. It was there that she met Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell), and was challenged with unraveling the mystery of this alien soldier. Unable to capture Marvel, Danvers was forced to leave N.A.S.A. and take a job at WOMAN magazine, where the powers and persona of Ms. Marvel began to emerge. Those powers included flight, enhanced strength, durability and the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts from her hands. Mar-Vell eventually died of cancer, and Danvers name became changed to Binary, then Warbird, and eventually, Captain Marvel.

We have no further information on the film at this time, and aren’t sure if Samuel L. Jackson will pop as Fury or if a new J. Jonah Jameson will be featured (Jameson is Danvers’ boss at WOMAN), but as ever, we’ll bring you more news as it comes in.
