Magnum P.I., the hugely popular television series which was led by Tom Selleck, is set to return to the small screen, so reports Deadline.
The new show, which is being set up at ABC, will feature a lead female protagonist, Lily “Tommy” Magnum, who returns to Hawaii to take up the mantle of her father’s PI firm.
Trade blog Deadline also reports that Magnum and her tribe of friends mix tropical beaches with the seedy underbelly of international crime and modern espionage, even as she tries to unravel the mystery of the blown spy operation that ended her career in Navy Intelligence. It will keep the comedy/action element of the original show, which ran from 1980-1988.
Eva Longoria’s production company UnbeliEVAble Entertainment is co-producing the new show over at Universal TV.
“We knew no one could replace the iconic role of Thomas Magnum, so John decided to make the reboot a sequel and continue the adventure of a Magnum — his daughter, who was established in the original series,” Longoria and co-producer Ben Spector said in a statement to Deadline.
There’s no news as to who will assume the lead role in the new show, but we’ll keep you posted.
