No sooner have we posted news of a new TV series based on the hit 2006 Oscar-winner The Departed, news reaches THN that Chris O’Dowd is all set to lead a new small-screen version of Elmore Leonard’s book Get Shorty.

Get Shorty was famously turned into a 1990s John Travolta vehicle, to huge acclaim, and now Deadline report that a TV version is on its way, to air on Epix. Chris O’Dowd will play the role originally played by Travolta in the Barry Sonnenfeld directed feature, though will be called Miles Daly (not Chili Palmer), who works as muscle for a murderous crime ring in Nevada.

Deadline adds that ‘for the sake of his daughter, he attempts to change professions and become a movie producer, laundering money through a Hollywood film. But instead of leaving the criminal world behind, he accidentally brings it with him to Los Angeles.’

Ray Romano (Vinyl) will play Rick, ‘a washed up producer of low quality films who becomes Miles’ partner and guide through the maze of Hollywood.’ That role was played by Gene Hackman in the 1995 movie.

Here’s the full synopsis for Leonard’s original book:

Mob-connected loan shark Chili Palmer is sick of the Miami grind—plus his “friends” have a bad habit of dying there. So when he chases a deadbeat client out to Hollywood, Chili figures he might like to stay. This town, with its dream-makers, glitter, hucksters, and liars—plus gorgeous, partially clad would-be starlets everywhere you look—seems ideal for an enterprising criminal with a taste for the cinematic. Besides, Chili’s got an idea for a killer movie, though it could very possibly kill him to get it made.
