In a couple of weeks, Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez will wow us with his latest movie Don’t Breathe – trust us we’ve seen it – and the filmmaker has already been out and about promoting the movie in Los Angeles. Our good friend and film commentator Simon Thompson caught up with Alvarez to talk about the film and he’s just posted his interview over at Forbes.

In the interview, of course Alvarez spoke a lot about Don’t Breathe, but some interesting information came later in the interview where the filmmaker revealed that he turned down the chance to work on some pretty big movies, but would jump at the chance to make a certain space opera sequel.

“After Evil Dead, because it opened and made money, I did have a chance to go and explore things like that, they were basically meetings that I was invited to. I had one about Fast and Furious 6 coming out of Evil Dead but I always said no to those because I believe that filmmakers need to have time to create their own body of work.”

“Eventually, when you have five or six movies, maybe then you have a body of work that is heavy enough that you win in that process of making movies by committee. Obviously, I would love to do a Star Wars movie if I get the chance because I am a big fan but maybe the more movies they make the less excited I will be but today, I am still excited about the prospect of maybe doing one of those. There is a lot of 80s stuff that I like, but they’re not even big franchises anymore. I think with some projects it is that I believe I will have fun with it rather than it being a clever thing to do.”

So, have conversations taken place for Star Wars?

“The Star Wars conversations haven’t happened yet but I am waiting for my phone to ring,” Alvarez added. “I made a lot of Star Wars fan films before I did Panic Attack, lightsaber fights and things like that, I’ve always been a big fan and it’s always been my first love in movies, but it’s a very competitive business and there’s a lot of great directors who will get that job. Calls happened about Marvel but I said no to all of those.”
