Meryl Streep Mary Poppins news: Oscar-winner looking to board sequel at Disney.
More on the Meryl Streep Mary Poppins news below.
Meryl Streep is said to be in talks to join the cast of Mary Poppins Returns, the highly anticipated sequel over at Walt Disney Productions. Emily Blunt has already been confirmed to star in the title role of Poppins, a role first made famous by Julie Andrews over 50 years ago.
According to Variety, Streep is looking to play the part of Topsy Turvy (Poppins’ cousin) in the movie, a character that featured in Mary Poppins Comes Back. It looks like Turvy is a cousin by marriage as Poppins has a cousin named Mr. Turvy, who marries Topsy Tartlett, making her, of course, Topsy Turvy.
The trade says that the new film will draw from the seven Mary Poppins novels, with the story taking place in Depression-era London, and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives. David Magee has adapted for the screen and Marc Platt and John DeLuca are producing for the Mouse House.
Also starring in the film is Lin Manuel-Miranda, star of Broadway’s Hamilton, who will play the new character, lamplighter Jack.
Rob Marshall is directing the film, and according to the trade, the role will require Streep to sing, something that she’s accustomed – she famously sang in Into The Woods, a film which garner her with a 19th Oscar nomination and kind of sung in this year’s superb Florence Foster Jenkins.
Blunt and Streep famously appeared in the film version of the book The Devil Wears Prada, which proved hugely popular.
She isn’t 100% confirmed as yet, but we’ll keep you updated on the Mary Streep Mary Poppins news as it comes in.
