The third movie in the Star Trek series, Star Trek Beyond, has been outpaced at the UK box-office by Steven Spielberg‘s family friendly The BFG. The Mark Rylance-led adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic book took a respectable £5.2 million over it opening weekend in the UK and Ireland, while Star Trek Beyond took a still decent £4.7m.
The BFG hasn’t performed brilliantly over in the US where it was released much earlier this month. On domestic soil the family adventure has only managed to take $51 million to date, and with a reported $140 million budget, it will have to go some to turn a profit.
In comparison, Star Trek Beyond opened to the tune of $59 million during its first three days Stateside after a pretty intense worldwide promotional campaign. The sequel has grossed $95 million worldwide since release last Friday.
Andre Rieu’s 2016 Maastricht Concert hit the number three spot in the UK last weekend. The event screening is now UK’s highest-grossing music concert, according to Screen Daily.
Here’s how the rest of the top five was made up.
- The BFG – £5.28m
- Star Trek Beyond – £4.74m
- Andre Rieu’s 2016 Maastricht Concert – £1.41m
- Ghostbusters – £1.32m
- The Secret Life of Pets – £1.21m
