Comic Con over in San Diego is officially off and running and was nicely kicked off with the world premiere of Star Trek Beyond on Wednesday night. Well, producer J.J. Abrams is also in town to promote the film, and he caught up with the folks over at Entertainment Weekly where the conversation quickly moved on to the next installment in the franchise which has already been announced.
Star Trek 4 will see Chris Hemsworth return as Captain James T. Kirk’s father, George, with the Thor actor already signed to reprise his very brief role from the 2009 movie, which Abrams directed.
Speaking with the magazine, Abrams said:
So one of the reasons that I’m hoping [Star Trek Beyond] does well is so that we can, without question, get that movie made. It really is an amazing story. It’s really the reason we made the deal with Chris Hemsworth as soon as we could because we really wanted that story to be told, so fingers crossed. [It’s my] favorite Star Trek story that we’ve had.
Wow. Some praise. Abrams stepped away from the camera for ‘Beyond’, letting Fast and Furious helmer Justin Lin take control. A director hasn’t been revealed for Star Trek 4 yet – who knows, judging by the those comments, perhaps Abrams could return?
More news on this as we get it, and more from Comic Con as the weekend rolls on.
Star Trek Beyond opens today.
