This should be the least surprising news of the week. It looks like Dreamworks are pushing a head on a fifth Shrek movie and it may be targeting a 2019 release.
Dreamworks was bought by Comcast earlier this year for near to $4 billion, so the fact that they want to revive some of their past hits should come at no surprise. It looks like Shrek is the top priority at the studio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Comcast’s NBCUniversal are planning two DreamWorks Animation films per year, and they are slating “Shrek 5 and a film from Edgar Wright and David Walliams titled Shadows” for 2019. With that date in mind, production would have to start pretty swiftly as these kind of movies take at least three years to make.
The last Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, was released in 2010 and grossed $750 million at the box-office. The Shrek series in total has amassed a huge $3.5 billion making it the fourth biggest movie series of all time – no wonder the studio are looking to revisit.
Next up for Dreamworks is Trolls, the Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake-led movie, which is due in October.
More news as it comes in.
