It looks like William Shatner is wide open to returning to his most iconic role of Captain Kirk. The 85-year-old actor was speaking at the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles where he urged fans to write to the studio to make a return to the role in a future movie possible.
The role is played by Chris Pine in the forthcoming Star Trek sequel Star Trek Beyond, which hits cinemas next month after a world premiere at the San Diego Comic Con. Shatner denied that he is in the film, but would be open to a return in a future movie.
“We’d all be open to it, but it’s not going to happen,” he said.
“The fans would love to see it. Have them write to JJ Abrams at Paramount Studios.” He added.
Chris Pine recently spoke about a potential team-up with Kirk in a future movie. He spoke to SFX.
“At this point there’s been so much built up about this potential portentous meeting between the two Kirks,” he said.“It would just become about that,” he adds. “The movie can’t become about that. The movie has to be about whatever story we’re trying to tell. It’d be fun, it’d be kitschy, it’d be a great piece for you guys to talk about, and for late-night TV, but above and beyond that I don’t know what it serves for our storytelling purposes, you know?”
Apparently the teaming of the two Kirks was planned for the new movie, but was axed at the script stage.
Star Trek Beyond will hit theatres on July 22nd 2016.
