Steven Spielberg‘s The BFG finally got its U.S. premiere last night after its glitzy debut in Cannes last month, and of course the legendary director walked the red carpet to talk up his film. Earlier on in the day, Spielberg spoke at a press conference to a bunch of international reporters where the subject of Star Wars came up. Don’t expect him to be heading to a galaxy far, far away any time soon.

“I’m never going to make a Star Wars film. That’s not my genre,” Spielberg said. “It’s certainly my buddy’s — the Thomas Edison of science fiction, George Lucas, who created the entire series. But that was never for me. I’m just a fan; I’m just with everybody else in the audience watching them.”

Spielberg will re-team with his Bridge Of Spies and The BFG star Mark Rylance for The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara and Ready Player One, and will then reunite with Harrison Ford for another Lucasfilm property – a fifth Indiana Jones movie. That film is set for release in 2019.

Star Wars has its next two directors set – Rian Johnson for the in-production Episode 8, and Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow for Episode 9.

The BFG hits UK shores on July 22nd. You can check out our review from Cannes over here.
