Eli Roth comic book movie could be on the way…

Eli Roth has managed to carve himself out quite a decent career over the past 15 years or so. After exploding onto the scene with the low-budget ‘cabin in the woods’ horror movie Cabin Fever in 2002 (which was remade pretty much shot-for-shot just recently), Roth went on to direct, and have success with the likes of Hostel and its two sequels, The Green Inferno and acting in various films too, including Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. He has a new film coming out in U.S. theaters and on-demand named Clown, which hits June 17th, and Simon Thompson over on Forbes caught up with him to talk about the film.

During the interview, Simon asked the filmmaker if he would ever consider a comic book movie for a big studio, and his answer was really rather interesting. Some big Eli Roth comic book movie news…

“That stuff really came my way heavily after Hostel, Hostel Part II and Inglorious Basterds,” Roth said. “I was the go-to guy for a lot of that stuff. At the time I just wasn’t that interested in doing it; I really wanted to follow my own compass and do things like The Man with the Iron Fists and things that I thought were weird and interesting and cool. Now I am in a place where I have done five movies that I have written, produced, directed. and I am totally open to doing a studio film, it looks like a lot of fun. I have written a number of screenplays that have been produced, and I can always go back to the smaller, more personal films like The Green Inferno or Knock Knock, but I am much more open to doing those bigger films now and I am in the mix for several different films.”

So, is there a specific character in mind?

“Yes there is, and I have yet to convince a studio to do it,” he teased, “It is one of those obscure ones that I think would be an amazing adaptation, but the studio just isn’t there yet. They didn’t even know they had it, or they knew it and they thought about it and sort of dismissed it, but I still bring it up. In order for me to get that, it’s a very expensive one, I would have to do a studio movie that is very visual effects heavy to really show that I could do it. It, for sure, could happen but I won’t tell you what the character is.”

You can read the full article over on Forbes (at the end of the link above) where Roth talks about his upcoming movie Clown, which originated from a faux-trailer, and also on the rise of piracy in Hollywood. It’s a really interesting read. Clown, which is produced by Roth and directed by Jon Watts (also a future Marvel director with Spider-Man: Homecoming) opens in the U.S. on June 17th. It was released in the U.K. back in March and you can watch the terrifying trailer over here.
