Kill Command review

Kill Command has flown in under the radar and releases in limited cinemas in the UK Friday 13th May. We caught the film quite a while back at a small screening with absolutely no expectation or knowledge of Steven Gomez‘s sci-fi film, but were met with delight as this low-budgeter appears to be somewhat of a hidden gem.

The film is set sometime in the near future, where society is dominated by technology, including the security services. In the film, a group of elite soldiers, led by Thure Lindhart‘s Captain Bukes, are helicoptered onto a remote island for an apparent training exercise. Things aren’t exactly what they first seem when a group of advanced robotic killer machines turn on Bukes and his team, and the exercise soon turns in to a battle for survival.

Steven Gomez impresses with his debut directorial feature, following some outstanding VFX work that actually landed him an Emmy for the 2007 National Geographic TV documentary for Inside The Living Body. Kill Command is highly ambitious film that delivers some really quite epic visual effects on an extremely low-budget, all of which could give any big-budget Hollywood fare a good run for its money. Part ‘Hunger Games’, part ‘Terminator’, crossed with more than a hint of ‘Predator’, delights from the off with an involving story and some supremely solid performances from its largely unknown cast.

One could complain of the repetitiveness of its subject matter, but the action and the highly detailed effects sequences more than make up for it. It is actually really well-paced with ample action sequences sprinkled healthily throughout, engaging the viewer right the way up to its thrilling climax.

Kill Command is actually reminiscent of Gareth Edwards’ work on the stunning Monsters, and Gomez show immense promise with this highly recommended debut.

A hugely creative, highly polished and truly solid action/ sci-fi that deserves your attention on its very limited cinema run.
