Mel Gibson was supplanted in moviegoers’ imaginations recently as Mad Max. Now it’s the turn of his other iconic character Martin Riggs to get a facelift, as Fox orders a full TV run of Lethal Weapon.
Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans Sr (pictured above) grab the baton off Gibson and Danny Glover. Psychologically unbalanced Riggs and perpetually stressed partner Roger Murtaugh gave the bad guys of LA hell across four action buddy movies, which made more dough than a Papa Johns on a double shift.
The reboot co-stars Fast & Furious franchise favourite Jordana Brewster. Helmer McG oversaw the pilot (written by Matt Miller) and he’ll exec produce for Warner Bros Television. Expect explosions, mismatched cop capers and the possible return of characters such as fast-talking Leo Getz, who Joe Pesci played on the big screen.
So, if you grew up in the Eighties you’re going to feel well and truly old. But don’t worry if you were raised in the decade before. Fox are ensuring the end of another era with one of their other greenlit projects – The Exorcist series, which for some reason stars Geena Davis.
