Entertainment Weekly reports that the Les Misérables filmmaker is attached to the project, which is set-up at Universal Pictures and Working Title Films.
The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.
Cats is one of the longest-running shows in West End and on Broadway, and received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 years and almost 9,000 performances. It returned to the stage in London in 2014. The original production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. Since its world premiere, Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 10 languages and has been seen by over 50 million people world-wide.
The musical is still touring theatres in the U.K. and Europe, and continues to pull in crowds every single night. It is set to return to Broadway this July.
No casting news as yet, but of course we’ll keep you posted.
